“Yeah, I think we lost them all now, Mike,” I said with relief as the driver continued to speed down a side road where we’d been unfollowed for at least ten minutes now. “I’ll lay low in one of the restaurants along the block and grab a bite to eat, and you can send Arty to get me in a completely different car. That ought to do the trick.”

“Good idea, sir,” said Mike. “Good thing you own offices around here and were able to make a call. I doubt any cab driver would have been willing to go quite this far to get you out of that mess.”

“Yeah, you’re a good man. Remind me to put a hefty bonus on your next paycheck.”

“Believe me, sir, I’ll hold you to it.” He chuckled as he stopped at a fast food joint and let me out.

Dressed so casually, and having just gotten out of a normal car rather than a limousine, I was feeling confident that nobody would realize a billionaire had just entered the establishment. I ordered a burger meal and went to a booth to wait for Arty’s call.

“I’m out front now, boss,” said Arty when I answered the phone. “The coast looks clear. I came with my own car from my house, like you asked me to.”

“Great, I’ll be right out,” I answered, and got into his car. Finally, I was able to get to the bakery and step inside. Jayla and Janelle were already there, looking around.

“There you are, finally,” Jayla said as she came over to put an arm around my waist.

I kissed the top of her head. “It took a bit longer than I expected,” I explained. “Now, let’s see what we can do about some pans in here.”

I went up to the counter and was soon able to obtain the necessary items I’d need to make the cake. I also acquired all the ingredients that we’d need, and picked up a decorating kit, which I chose to buy. “You never know when it might come in handy again,” I said with a shrug.

Janelle smiled at me then. “Planning on making your own wedding cake next?” she inquired sweetly.

Grinning speculatively at Jayla I said, “Well, you never know, right?”

I could tell that Jayla was blushing by the expression on her face, and chuckled wickedly as I gave her a squeeze. To retaliate, she punched my arm. Janelle found the whole exchange so entertaining she couldn’t help but laugh.

“See what you started now?” said Jayla to her mother. “There’ll be no dealing with him tonight. You have no idea. He’ll probably try to romance me to death or something equally as disgusting, and you’ll end up with a funeral instead. You just wait and see.”

“I wouldn’t romance you to death, my dear,” I told her with a smirk. “That would defeat the whole purpose, you know. If you were dead, it would be kind of stupid to marry your carcass, don’t you think? Well, unless you were a zombie or something.
